BHS Research awards 2021

British Hernia Society 2021 Research Awards Winners

Following the our advertisement via website and the newsletters, we had a very successful round of research applicants for the BHS research award. They were all of an excellent calibre; the board decided to award grants to three applications as listed below. It’s always difficult to choose, more so on this round as every application was deserving of something.

On behalf of the board, we wish them luck with their research and further information about the research specifics that the BHS is supporting will be found very soon on our website.

  1. RETAINER II – Development and validation of a patient reported outcome measure (PROM) for inguinal hernia repair – Christina Fleminghttps://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamasurgery/article-abstract/2806775
  2. Using an in vitro engineered 3D model of the human rectus sheath to standardise pre-clinical hernia mesh testing – Thomas Whitehead-Clarke
  3. Artificial intelligence for automatic detection of parastomal herniae on CT images – George E Fowle

Whilst congratulating the winners, we would like to extend our best wishes to the rest of the applicants who entered the competition with their brilliant applications. We thank you for your effort.

* Research can be defined as the attempt to derive generalisable or transferable new knowledge to answer or refine relevant questions with scientifically sound methods. This excludes: audit; needs assessments; quality improvement and other local service evaluations. It also excludes routine banking of biological samples or data except where this activity is integral to a self-contained research project designed to test a clear hypothesis.
