Success Story BHS virtual 2020

Despite COVID the British Hernia Society held a virtual meeting

Over a year ago the BHS proposed their 11th International meeting that was to be held in Newport South Wales at the newly built International Conference Centre. This was planned to take place as a traditional ‘face to face’ meeting but we are all aware of the scourge of COVID both locally and worldwide. This however did not deter the local organizers David Sanders from Devon and Brian Stephenson from Newport, their surgical colleagues and industry sponsors.

The theme of the meeting “Improving our patients’ outcomes after hernia surgery” was held on a virtual platform over two days (2-3 November) and attracted over 560 delegates from both sides of the globe (from Argentina to Australia). Renowned speakers from the UK, Europe and America, gave up their time gratis and dialed in to give lectures and answer questions from these delegates.

“The ‘virtual’ conference went off very smoothly and the feedback has been most encouraging” said the organizers. “We recorded the meeting so as the content can be used as part of an educational library in the future. Although many clinicians miss the fraternity of a personal conference the audience were most complimentary. We all hope that normality can be resumed as soon and as safely as possible.
