The British Hernia Society is pleased to invite applications for the Board position of Director of Congresses. The appointment will commence immediately and will include a nine-month overlap with the current Director of Congresses to ensure a supported and structured transition.
The Society’s flagship conference is held biennially, with the next meeting scheduled for November 2026. In alternate years, the Society delivers a virtual workshop and, in 2027, will host a one-day meeting within the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland Annual Congress.
The Director of Congresses works closely with the appointed Professional Conference Organiser (PCO) and the wider Board over the 18 months preceding each congress. Responsibilities include developing the scientific programme; identifying and inviting speakers; liaising with industry partners; ensuring the financial viability of the meeting; overseeing venue selection; and coordinating marketing activities in collaboration with the Director of Communications and the PCO. The role also encompasses programme development for Society-led sessions at external meetings and support of additional events, including the virtual workshop.
This is a pivotal leadership role within the Society, carrying significant responsibility but supported throughout by the Board and an experienced PCO, who manages the administrative components of the conference. The successful applicant will join the Board of the British Hernia Society and serve as a Trustee of the organisation.
Enthusiastic consultant surgeons are warmly encouraged to apply. Applicants are invited to submit a brief CV together with a short supporting statement outlining their suitability for the role to: President@britishherniasociety.org. Application deadline midnight 15th March 2026.
