Asim Abbas

Director of Communications

Dr Asim Abbas is an Abdominal Wall Research Fellow at the York Abdominal Wall Unit, where his research focusses on the qualitative assessment of Quality of Life in patients with abdominal wall hernias. His clinical and research work is underpinned by a commitment to advancing patient care and surgical innovation. In addition to his research and clinical responsibilities, Asim serves as Course Convenor for the CADSIM Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (AWR) course at York, a program for surgical trainees to develop the knowledge and skills in AWR.

Asim brings expertise in digital engagement and strategic communication, including piloting the use of smart technologies, such as smart glasses, to enhance surgical training and documentation. His dedication to improving patient education is exemplified by his work on supporting the development of national hernia consent forms for the GIRFT program and the redevelopment of patient-friendly hospital resources.

His commitment to serving the community is reflected in governance engagements, including as a Primary School Governor, where he champions student health and wellbeing, and he has served as a trustee of the Sheffield Students’ Union, including on their Audit and Risk subcommittee, overseeing strategic and financial operations for the multimillion-pound charity. Additionally, his active involvement in the British Medical Association’s committees focuses on policies that support both doctors and medical students. Asim also regularly interviews for Sheffield Medical School.

In his role as Director of Communications for the British Hernia Society, Asim aims to expand the Society’s outreach through targeted social media strategies, innovative digital tools, and collaborative partnerships. He is passionate about engaging with the broader hernia community to elevate awareness of hernia care and research while ensuring all our communications reflect the Society’s aim to “ensure national and international quality in hernia surgery”.

Outside of his professional work, Asim enjoys traveling, cycling, gaming on his PlayStation, and unwinding with Netflix crime and thriller movies.
