David Layfield is a Consultant in Surgery for Intestinal Failure, Complex Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Revisional Abdominal Wall Reconstruction.
He performs major open surgery to reconstruct the gastrointestinal tract and to treat recurrent complicating Crohn’s disease. David has a subspecialty interest in abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) for complex and recurrent abdominal wall hernias and parastomal hernias. He is part of a tertiary regional team providing a nationally commissioned service for patients with Intestinal Failure across Southern England.
David trained in London, Yorkshire & Wessex, and has a PhD in the immune response to vaccination and antigen processing by regulatory T-lymphocytes awarded by the University of Southampton.
He took up his consultant position at University Hospital Southampton in 2021 and prior to that spent a year as a post-CCT fellow at Salford Royal Hospital within the National Intestinal Failure unit.
In addition to the British Hernia Society, David also undertakes education and training courses on behalf of Charity and Industry. University Hospital Southampton runs a Post-CCT fellowship programme in complex colorectal surgery, inclusive of Intestinal Failure Surgery and cAWR.
