St Thomas inguinal hernia study day
A practical, hands-on study day designed to provide trainees with a structured introduction to open inguinal hernia repair.

The programme includes:
• Hands-on training using surgical models, with each trainee given the opportunity to perform an open inguinal hernia repair under the supervision of abdominal wall consultant surgeons.
• Groin anatomy teaching, focusing on the key anatomical landmarks relevant to open hernia surgery.
• A step-by-step operative video demonstration of an open inguinal hernia repair, highlighting the key stages and surgical principles.
• Consent and pre-operative assessment, including discussion of the procedure, potential risks and complications.
• An overview of mesh options, including the different types of mesh available and considerations when selecting mesh.
• Types of inguinal hernia repair, covering the principles and techniques of open repairs.
