Katie Gilmore

Katie Gilmore is a general surgical trainee in the Peninsula Deanery. She developed a strong interest in hernia surgery during her ST3 year while working at the North Devon Comprehensive Hernia Centre, Barnstaple, where she first experienced complex abdominal wall reconstruction cases.
Having completed ST5 in August 2024, Katie is currently out of programme conducting a 2 year research fellowship, focused on patient-centred outcomes in umbilical hernia repair. She is also gaining dedicated hernia and robotic surgical training in the Abdominal Wall Surgery Centre at Golden Jubilee University National Hospital, Glasgow, further developing her knowledge and skills in advanced abdominal wall reconstruction techniques.
Katie is actively involved in academic surgery and currently sits on the guidelines panel for Emergency Incisional Hernia Repair with the European Hernia Society (EHS). Her research and clinical interests are closely aligned, and she is passionate about improving evidence-based approaches in hernia care.
Recognising the current gaps in higher surgical training curricula, Katie is committed to widening access to high-quality hernia training opportunities for all surgical trainees and supporting the development of the next generation of abdominal wall specialists.
