Irish Representative
Sean Johnston is a general, laparoscopic, and Emergency surgeon, based at the midland regional hospital Tullamore in Ireland, with a specific interest in hernia and AWR surgery with a particular interest in repair of recurrent hernia
He conducted his research thesis as a research Fellow at the department of general and pancreatic Surgery The Johns Hopkins Hospital Maryland USA.
He is the Head of Department of general surgery Midland regional hospital since 2010 and was Lead clinical Director at the hospital from 2012 to 2021.
He is a council member Of the RCSI and sits on a number of RCSI national committees and short term working groups and is the present chair of the RCSI Northern Ireland Committee for the 2024 to 2026 session of council. He has also been a member of a no of RCSI nationally lead Surgical QI improvement programmes including the general surgery advisory group, and the preoperative assessment clinics establishment committee.
He is presently Training programme director for higher surgical training in general surgery for the Republic of Ireland and the RCSI representative on the intercollegiate speciality board for general surgery JCIE. He is also a FRCS examiner in general surgery and A fellowship examiner in general surgery for the European board of Surgery.
He holds Adjunct position of associate professor of Surgery School of medicine University of Limerick .
His academic interests include surgical training, Surgical Service improvement, surgical sustainability and advancing Hernia care.
